Black Spots And Black Specks

Injection molding is a highly efficient manufacturing process, but defects like black spots and black specks can compromise product quality. These imperfections not only affect aesthetics but may also weaken structural integrity, leading to rejected parts and increased production costs.

What Are Black Spots and Black Specks?

1. Black Spots

Black spots are larger, irregular discolorations (typically >1mm) that appear on the surface or within the molded part. They are often caused by material degradation, contamination, or machine-related issues.

2. Black Specks

Black specks are tiny, scattered particles (usually <1mm) embedded in the plastic. They are commonly caused by carbonized resin, dust contamination, or residual burnt material in the barrel or nozzle.

Causes of Black Spots in Injection Molding

1. Material Degradation (Overheating or Long Residence Time)

  • Plastic overheats in the barrel, leading to carbonization.
  • Common in heat-sensitive materials (e.g., PVC, PET).

2. Contaminated Raw Material

  • Foreign particles (dust, metal shavings, degraded pellets) mix into the melt.
  • Poor storage conditions (moisture, exposure to dirt).

3. Dirty Mold or Machine Components

  • Residual oil, grease, or old plastic in the screw, barrel, or nozzle.
  • Mold release agents or lubricants contaminating the part.

4. Machine Wear (Screw or Barrel Damage)

  • Worn-out screws or barrels generate metal flakes that mix into the melt.

How to Prevent Black Spots and Black Specks

1. Optimize Processing Parameters

  • Reduce barrel temperature to avoid overheating.
  • Shorten cycle times to prevent material degradation.
  • Ensure proper screw speed and backpressure to minimize shear heating.

2. Maintain Proper Material Handling

  • Dry hygroscopic plastics (e.g., nylon, PET) before molding.
  • Use clean, sealed containers to prevent dust contamination.
  • Filter raw materials with mesh screens.

3. Regular Machine Maintenance

  • Clean the screw and barrel regularly to remove burnt residues.
  • Check for wear and tear (replace damaged screws/barrels).
  • Purge thoroughly when changing materials or colors.

4. Mold and Hot Runner Care

  • Clean mold surfaces to remove grease or carbon deposits.
  • Improve mold venting to prevent trapped air and burning.
  • Inspect hot runners for dead spots or clogging.

Black spots and black specks are common but preventable defects in injection molding. While black spots usually stem from material degradation or contamination, black specks are often caused by carbonized residues or dust.

By optimizing processing conditions, maintaining equipment, and ensuring clean material handling, we can significantly reduce these defects. Regular audits of temperature settings, screw condition, and mold cleanliness will help maintain consistent, high-quality production.
