Digital Light Processing

Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a display and imaging technology based on optical microelectronics technology, invented by Texas Instruments (TI) in 1987. Its core is to control light through a tiny adjustable mirror array (called a digital micromirror device, DMD) to achieve high-precision and high-speed image generation.

Core Technical Principle of Digital Light Processing (DLP)

The core of Digital Light Processing (DLP) is the digital micromirror device (DMD), which is composed of millions of tiny adjustable mirrors, each micromirror corresponds to a pixel.

1. Micromirror Control

  • Each micromirror can quickly switch between two angles (usually ±12°), corresponding to the “on” (reflecting light to the screen) and “off” (light is absorbed) states.
  • By adjusting the on-off time ratio of the micromirror (PWM pulse width modulation), the brightness level (grayscale) of the pixel can be controlled.

2. Color Generation

  • Traditional Digital Light Processing (DLP) Projectors: Use a high-speed rotating color wheel (RGB or RGBW color filter) combined with the human eye’s visual persistence effect to mix full-color images.
  • Advanced DLP system: Uses RGB LED or laser light sources, no color wheel is required, and the three primary colors are directly projected in time-sharing, improving color accuracy and brightness.

3. Resolution and Enhancement Technology

  • The native resolution depends on the number of micromirrors on the DMD chip (e.g., 1920×1080 corresponds to about 2 million micromirrors).
  • XPR (pixel shift technology): Through high-speed dithering of micromirrors, 1080p DMD simulates 4K resolution (such as TI’s 4K UHD DLP solution).

DLP vs. Other 3D Printing Technologies

Technology Full Name Materials Precision Best Applications
FDM Fused Deposition Modeling Thermoplastics (PLA, ABS, etc.) Medium Prototypes, functional parts, education
SLA Stereolithography Photopolymer resin High High-precision models, jewelry, dentistry
SLS Selective Laser Sintering Nylon, metal powders High Industrial-grade complex components
DLP Digital Light Processing Photopolymer resin High Rapid prototyping, dental molds

Advantages and Challenges of Digital Light Processing (DLP)

Advantages

  • High contrast: The micromirrors completely block light when turned off, and the black is purer.
  • Fast response: The micromirror switching speed is in microseconds, and there is no motion blur.
  • Long life: There is no liquid crystal aging problem, and the DMD chip is durable.
  • High efficiency of 3D printing: whole-layer exposure is faster than point-by-point scanning.

Challenges

  • Rainbow effect (color wheel model): high-speed color wheel may cause color separation.
  • High cost: high-end DMD chips and optical systems are expensive.
  • Heat dissipation requirements: high-brightness projection requires efficient heat dissipation design.

Future Development Trends of Digital Light Processing (DLP)

  • Smaller Size: pico-DLP is used for AR/VR and mobile phone projection.
  • Higher resolution: combination of 8K DMD chip and AI super-resolution technology.
  • Environmentally friendly light source: laser + LED hybrid light source improves energy efficiency and color performance.
  • Biomedical applications: DLP is used in cutting-edge fields such as optogenetics and cell printing.

DLP technology continues to innovate in display, manufacturing and medical fields with its unique optical modulation capabilities. With the advancement of micromirror technology, light sources and computing algorithms, DLP will expand more high-precision and high-performance application scenarios in the future and become one of the key enabling technologies in the digital age.
