High-Temperature Plastics

With the rapid development of new energy vehicles (NEVs), lightweight design, safety, and extended range have become key industry priorities. High-temperature-resistant plastics (High-temperature plastics), thanks to their excellent performance, play a crucial role in critical components such as battery systems, electric motors, electronic controls, and charging infrastructure, serving as ideal substitutes for traditional metal materials.

Key Material for Battery Systems

The power batteries in NEVs generate significant heat during operation, especially high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, where internal temperatures can exceed 100°C. High-temperature plastics—such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and polyamide (PA)—are widely used in battery housings, module brackets, and insulation components. For example:

  • PPS Plastic: Withstands temperatures up to 220°C long-term and is flame-retardant, making it ideal for battery module housings to reduce weight and prevent thermal runaway.
  • Reinforced PA66: Used in battery cooling system pipelines, offering high-temperature resistance and chemical corrosion resistance to prevent coolant leakage.

Lightweight Solutions for Motors and Electronic Control Systems

Electric motors and electronic control units (e.g., inverters) in NEVs must endure high temperatures and electromagnetic interference. While traditional metal housings are heavy, high-temperature plastics (e.g., PBT, LCP) significantly reduce weight while meeting performance requirements:

  • PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate): Resists temperatures above 130°C and is used in motor insulation end caps, combining mechanical strength with electrical insulation.
  • LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer): Used in high-voltage connectors, ensuring stable performance under heat and maintaining secure current transmission.

Durability and Safety in Charging Infrastructure

Fast-charging technology demands higher heat resistance from charging equipment materials. Examples include:

  • PEEK Plastic: Withstands temperatures over 250°C, making it suitable for internal components of charging guns to prevent deformation or short circuits.
  • Flame-Retardant PC (Polycarbonate): Used in charging station housings, meeting UL94 V0 flame resistance standards while maintaining heat resistance.

Future Trends: Higher Performance and Sustainability

As NEVs transition to high-voltage platforms (800V and above), the demand for high-temperature plastics will grow further. Future material development will focus on:

  • Composite Materials: Such as carbon fiber-reinforced PPS, enhancing strength while reducing weight.
  • Recyclable Plastics: Including bio-based high-temperature nylons, aligning with environmental sustainability goals.

High-temperature plastics contribute to NEVs by reducing weight, improving safety, and lowering costs, enabling longer ranges and higher efficiency. With advancements in material technology, their applications will continue to expand, making them an indispensable part of the new energy vehicle industry.
