| Typical Applications | Gears, shafts | Precision molds, medical devices | Fasteners, small parts | Cutting tools, wear parts |
| Main Advantages | Mature process, low cost | Minimal distortion, high efficiency | Short cycle time | Simple equipment |
| Main Disadvantages | Long duration, high energy consumption | Expensive equipment | Environmental pollution | Environmental pollution |
Additional Notes
- Plasma nitriding is particularly suitable for stainless steel molds as it can break through the passive surface layer
- For hot work tool steels like H13, plasma nitriding is recommended, achieving surface hardness of 1000-1200HV
- Precision injection molds should preferably use plasma nitriding, with distortion controllable within 0.02mm
- Salt bath/liquid nitriding are being phased out in developed regions due to environmental concerns
