Nitriding Treatment

What’s Nitriding Treatment?

Nitriding Treatment is a surface hardening heat treatment that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of steel or alloy parts to significantly increase hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. Unlike other heat treatments, nitriding occurs at relatively low temperatures (typically 500°C–550°C) and does not require quenching, resulting in minimal distortion.

The process forms a hard nitrided layer on the surface while preserving the core’s toughness. It’s widely used in mold components, gears, crankshafts, and other precision-engineered parts that require excellent surface performance without altering dimensions.

FAQ Of Nitriding Treatment

Visit our FAQ center for more questions.

What materials are suitable for nitriding?

Typically, alloy steels containing elements like chromium, molybdenum, aluminum, or vanadium respond well to nitriding, because these form stable nitrides. Nitriding is most effective on tool steel, nitriding steel (e.g., 38CrMoAl), and some stainless steels.

What are the advantages of nitriding compared to carburizing or quenching?

Nitriding provides high surface hardness, excellent wear resistance, improved fatigue strength, and minimal distortion—all without requiring post-treatment machining. This makes it ideal for precision parts and surfaces with tight tolerances.

How deep is the hardened layer created by nitriding?

The nitrided case depth typically ranges from 0.1 mm to 0.7 mm, depending on the material and treatment duration. Although the layer is shallow, it is extremely hard and wear-resistant, making it suitable for high-performance surfaces.
