FAQ Of Injection Molding

Visit our FAQ center for more questions.

What is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic injection molding involves melting granular plastic pellets into a liquid form and then compressing this liquid into the empty cavity of a mold tool. The plastic will retain the shape of the mold as well as the surface texture of the walls of the cavity. After an optimized injection and cooling phase, the now solidified plastic part is ejected and the molding cycle is repeated. This molding cycle can take from as little as a few seconds to several minutes depending upon part size, molding resin and part design.

Principle of Plastic Injection Molding

A model with a certain shape created by pressurizing molten colloid into a mold chamber is referred to as injection molded. The method is to melt the solid plastic to a specific melting temperature and then inject it into the mold at a specific speed using the injection machine‘s pressure. The mold then uses water channel cooling to solidify the plastic, producing the desired product for the mold cavity.

The process of injection molding involves consistently plasticizing thermoplastic or thermosetting molding materials in a heated barrel before pushing them using a plunger or moving a screw into the cavity of a closed mold to be molded.

Nearly all thermoplastics can be molded with injection molding, and certain thermosets have also been molded successfully using this technique. In addition, the molding cycle is brief (a few seconds to minutes), the molded products’ quality can vary from a few grams to dozens of kilos, and multiple complexly shaped, precisely measured, and metal or non-metal insert molded goods can be formed at once. As a result, this technique offers great versatility and high productivity.

Why is Injection Molding Tooling So Expensive?

Injection molding tooling is costly because it requires high-precision machining, durable steel materials, and complex engineering to ensure long mold life and stable production. The mold must withstand high pressure, high temperature, and repeated cycles, which demands advanced equipment, skilled labor, and tight manufacturing tolerances. All these factors contribute to the overall cost.

What Factors Influence Injection Mold Tooling Design?

Injection mold design is influenced by part geometry, material type, expected production volume, gate and runner layout, cooling efficiency, draft angles, and tolerance requirements. Mold designers must balance strength, manufacturability, molding stability, and cost to create a tool that performs reliably and produces consistent, high-quality parts.
