PVD
What’s PVD?
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is an advanced surface treatment technology that deposits thin films on material surfaces through physical methods. It utilizes processes such as evaporation, sputtering, or ion plating in a vacuum environment to form functional coatings that are highly hard, corrosion-resistant, and wear-resistant.
This technology is environmentally friendly and requires minimal material consumption, making it suitable for coating a variety of materials, including metals, alloys, ceramics, and polymers.

Core Principles of PVD
- Vacuum Environment: Performed under high vacuum conditions of 10⁻³ to 10⁻⁶ Pa.
- Material Vaporization: Atomization/ionization of the target material (such as Ti, Cr, Al, etc.) is achieved through arc, electron beam, or magnetron sputtering.
- Film Deposition: Vaporized material particles are deposited onto the workpiece surface under the influence of an electric field or thermal energy, forming a nanometer to micrometer-scale thin film.
Advantages of PVD Coatings
- High Hardness: HV 2000-4000 (e.g., TiN coating has a hardness of ≈2400 HV).
- Corrosion Resistance: Insulates the substrate from corrosive media (e.g., CrN for use in marine environments).
- Decorative Effect: Available in colors such as gold (TiN) and black (TiAlN).
- Environmentally Friendly: No wastewater or exhaust pollution, RoHS compliant.
What is Specific Applications of PVD in Injection Molds?
- Improved Release Performance: DLC coating reduces friction and reduces mold sticking.
- Extended Service Life: CrN coating resists corrosion and wear from the plastic melt.
- Surface Repair: Localized PVD repair of minor scratches.
