Questions About CNC Machining

What is CNC machining?

CNC machining is a high-precision manufacturing process in which cutting tools are controlled by computer programs. By inputting a 3D model and processing parameters, the machine automatically performs milling, drilling, turning, and grinding operations to produce parts with complex geometries, tight tolerances, and high consistency. It is widely used in mold component manufacturing to reduce human error and improve efficiency and accuracy.

What’s the difference between CNC and traditional machining?

The key difference lies in automation and precision control. Traditional machining relies heavily on manual operations, which are subject to operator skill and machine stability. CNC machining, however, uses computer programming to control tool paths, enabling multi-axis motion and repeatable accuracy. This allows for easier production of complex parts with tight tolerances, offering higher precision, stability, shorter lead times, and lower rework costs.

Which mold components are suitable for CNC machining?

CNC machining can be applied to nearly all mold components, particularly those with complex shapes, tight tolerances, or multi-fit precision requirements—such as cores, cavity inserts, sliders, lifters, inserts, electrodes, and guiding components. For areas requiring mirror finishes or micron-level accuracy, CNC machining can be combined with secondary finishing processes like grinding and EDM for optimal precision and fit.

What are the advantages of 5-axis CNC machining?

Compared to 3-axis machining, 5-axis CNC offers greater flexibility and accuracy. It can process multiple faces and angles in a single setup, minimizing repositioning errors. This makes it ideal for complex free-form surfaces, angled holes, and multi-angle cavities. Additionally, 5-axis machining improves tool life, reduces processing time, and enhances surface finish—making it the top choice for high-precision mold manufacturing.

What is the general machining accuracy range?

Accuracy depends on machine performance, tooling, material, and setup. Standard 3- or 4-axis CNC machines typically achieve ±0.01 mm, while advanced 5-axis machines in temperature-controlled environments can reach ±0.005 mm or better. For critical mold areas, secondary processes like grinding, honing, or polishing are used to further enhance dimensional and surface precision.

How accurate can CNC machining be for complex geometries?

For intricate 3D shapes and curved surfaces, 5-axis CNC machining typically maintains ±0.005 mm to ±0.01 mm precision. When combined with fine grinding or EDM, tolerances can be improved to ±0.003 mm in key areas. Through optimized toolpath programming and thermal compensation, even highly complex geometries can achieve exceptional dimensional stability and surface quality.

Do precision parts require secondary machining or grinding?

Yes. After rough machining, fine finishing processes such as surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, honing, and polishing are often necessary to achieve micron-level tolerances and smoother surfaces. These processes ensure better assembly fit, reduce friction during mold operation, and extend the overall tool life.

What materials can CNC machines process?

CNC machining can handle nearly all common mold and industrial materials, including pre-hardened steels (P20, 1.2738), hardened steels (H13, S136, 1.2344), stainless steels (420, 1.2316), aluminum alloys, copper alloys (BeCu), titanium alloys, and engineering plastics (POM, PEEK, ABS). Each material requires specific tooling, speeds, and cooling strategies to ensure precision and surface quality.

Are there limitations for machining high-hardness materials?

Yes. Materials above HRC 55 cause faster tool wear and reduced surface quality. To manage this, we use carbide or coated tools and combine CNC machining with EDM or grinding for optimal efficiency. For ultra-hard materials (e.g., hardened tool steels or tungsten alloys), precision grinding or wire cutting is recommended to achieve micron-level accuracy and a smooth finish.

How does machining method affect surface finish?

Surface roughness (Ra) varies by process: precision CNC milling typically achieves Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, while additional grinding or polishing can reach Ra 0.2–0.4 μm for mirror finishes. EDM is ideal for intricate cavities but leaves a slightly rougher surface, which can be polished afterward. We tailor machining and finishing methods based on functional and aesthetic requirements to deliver the best results.

Other Questions
How long does CNC machining usually take?

Lead time depends on part complexity, material, precision, and quantity. Standard parts are typically completed within 3–7 days, while multi-process or 5-axis precision parts may take 1–3 weeks. We plan each project’s process route and machine schedule carefully and can offer expedited service for urgent orders.

What design considerations should I keep in mind for CNC parts?

Optimize designs for machinability: avoid overly deep or narrow cavities, excessive tool overhangs, and inaccessible areas. Maintain reasonable corner radii to prolong tool life and improve finish. Include critical dimensions, tolerances, and datum references in drawings. Our engineers can also provide a free design-for-manufacturing (DFM) review to ensure your design is CNC-ready.

Is CNC machining suitable for mass production?

CNC is best for small to medium batch production, especially for complex or high-precision components. For large-volume runs, we can implement multi-machine setups or automated tool changers to boost efficiency. When parts are highly repetitive, we recommend molding or other automated production methods to reduce unit cost.

How do you ensure machining precision and consistency?

We maintain precision through comprehensive quality control—from optimized CAM programming, temperature-controlled machining, and tool wear management to first-article and full inspections. All precision parts undergo CMM, projector, and surface roughness testing, with detailed inspection reports provided. We also store all machining and inspection data for repeat orders to guarantee batch-to-batch consistency.

Can I know your MOQ when I order CNC Machining Parts from you?

For sure. Actually we have no MOQ request in order to support customers, even you just order one parts. This is advantage for you if you have new idea to market fast without being tied to a specific quantity.
