Questions About Custom Components
What are custom mold components?
Custom mold components are non-standard parts designed and manufactured by professional mold makers according to a customer’s specific mold structure, product design requirements, or production process. Unlike standard off-the-shelf parts (such as guide pins, bushings, or springs), these components are typically customized based on project drawings or 3D models to ensure perfect fit, dimensional accuracy, and functional requirements.
What types of mold components can be customized?
Common custom mold components include:
- Sliders and Lifters:Enable lateral demolding or forming of complex features.
- Core and Cavity Inserts:Define the product shape and dimensions, serving as the mold’s core functional parts.
- Insert Components:For localized forming or quick replacement of specific mold regions.
- Ejector Pins & Sleeves:Ensure smooth ejection of molded parts.
- Cooling Components:Such as water nozzles and manifolds to ensure efficient mold cooling.
- Special surface or wear-resistant parts:High-hardness or coated parts depending on the plastic material.
What materials are available for mold components?
Common materials include:
- Pre-hardened Steel(e.g., P20, 1.2738, 718H) – good machinability, suitable for medium-volume molds.
- Hardened Steel(e.g., H13, S136, 1.2344) – high hardness and wear resistance, ideal for high-precision, high-volume core components.
- Stainless Steel(e.g., 420, 1.2316) – corrosion-resistant, suitable for medical or transparent molds.
- Copper Alloy(e.g., BeCu) – excellent thermal conductivity for efficient cooling; Powder Metallurgy steel and Tungsten Carbide are used for high-wear parts such as sliders, inserts, or punches.
What is the MOQ for Mold Components?
We have no MOQ request in order to support customers, even you just order one parts. This is advantage for you if you have new idea to market fast without being tied to a specific quantity.
What is the typical machining accuracy of custom components?
For standard components, machining accuracy is generally within ±0.01mm. For critical functional parts like cores, cavities, sliders, or guides, we can achieve ±0.005mm or higher as required. All components undergo strict inspection before shipment to ensure dimensional tolerances, fit, and surface quality fully meet design standards.
How to choose the machining method for high-precision parts?
When high precision is required, machining methods are chosen based on part geometry, material, tolerance, and surface finish. Precision CNC (3/4/5-axis) is suitable for complex structures, typically achieving ±0.01mm–±0.005mm; grinding and honing can reach ±0.001mm–±0.003mm; Wire EDM and EDM are ideal for hardened materials or complex internal contours, with accuracy around ±0.002mm–±0.01mm. For ultra-smooth surfaces or tight fits, secondary grinding or polishing can be applied. Heat treatment, batch size, and inspection methods should also be considered. We can recommend a tailored machining and inspection plan based on your drawings and key tolerances, balancing precision, cost, and efficiency.
What surface treatments and finishes are available?
Common surface treatments include polishing (improves surface finish, suitable for transparent or high-gloss molds), plating (chrome, nickel for wear and corrosion resistance), nitriding or ion implantation (increases hardness and wear resistance), PVD/TiN coating (reduces friction and extends mold life), blackening or oxidation (anti-rust), and sandblasting or etching (improves demolding or creates special textures). Surface finish ranges from mirror Ra0.2μm to functional roughness Ra1.6μm. We recommend the most suitable treatment based on material, usage, and customer requirements to ensure parts are both durable and visually appealing.
What is the design process for custom mold components?
The design process focuses on meeting customer requirements. We first confirm part function, dimensions, tolerances, and material. Then, engineers perform structural design and process evaluation, optimizing shape, mating surfaces, and draft angles. The design undergoes internal review and client confirmation, with sample production if needed. Final drawings and 3D models are created, considering machining, materials, and surface treatment to ensure high precision, durability, and ease of assembly and inspection.
What information or drawings should I provide?
To ensure accurate design and machining, we usually require complete product data or drawings, including 3D models or 2D engineering drawings, key dimensions and tolerances, material type, surface treatment or finish requirements, and functional/environmental information. If the part requires assembly or fits with other components, please provide relevant information. This allows us to quickly evaluate feasibility, optimize the design, and ensure the final parts meet your production and usage requirements.
What is the sample/prototype process?
The sample/prototype process validates design and machining plans before mass production. We first produce samples based on drawings or 3D models, then inspect dimensions, fit, function, and surface quality. We discuss with the customer whether adjustments to design or process are needed. Once confirmed, the samples serve as references for mass production.
What is the quotation process for custom components?
Quotation begins with the customer providing drawings or 3D models. We evaluate material, dimensions, tolerances, surface treatment, and machining feasibility, then provide a detailed quote and production recommendations.
What is the typical production lead time?
Lead time depends on part complexity, material selection, and batch size, typically ranging from a few days to several weeks.
Can I request expedited production?
For urgent orders, we offer expedited production via a dual-factory collaboration model: two factories can simultaneously process different parts or operations, significantly reducing lead time while maintaining quality standards. We also optimize machining sequences and increase equipment utilization to ensure on-time delivery with high precision and surface quality.
What if I need to modify part dimensions or design?
If adjustments are needed, we evaluate feasibility and impact on lead time. Minor changes can usually be updated directly within the current production plan. Structural or process modifications require a revised proposal for client confirmation before machining or re-sampling.
What if a quality issue occurs?
If a part has a quality issue during inspection or use, we immediately initiate a problem-solving process: identify the type and cause (machining, tolerance, material, or surface treatment), then provide corrective actions, including rework, remanufacture, or replacement. Root causes are analyzed and processes optimized to prevent recurrence.
