Questions About Injection Mold

What is a custom injection mold?

A custom injection mold is a mold specifically designed and manufactured according to the customer’s product design and production requirements, used for producing high-precision plastic parts through injection molding.

What types of injection molds can you customize?

We design and produce various types of molds tailored to different industries and applications, including single-color molds, two-shot molds, precision molds, multi-cavity molds, automotive interior/exterior molds, medical molds, and electronic connector molds—covering everything from prototype to mass production needs.

What materials can be used for injection molds?

We select appropriate mold steels and plastic materials based on product characteristics. Common mold steels include S136, H13, NAK80, and 718H, while plastic materials include ABS, PC, POM, PA, PP, PE, and PMMA, ensuring optimal strength, heat resistance, and surface appearance for each product.

What documents do we need to provide during the initial stage of mold development?

Thank you for your contact! To expedite the mold project launch, please provide the following essential documents. Supplementary files may be added based on product requirements:

1. Essential Core Documents to Submit
  • Product 2D Drawings: With complete dimensions, tolerances, parting line locations, and draft angles (recommended in PDF or DWG format).
  • 3D Model Files: In STEP/STP/IGES formats (ensure all features are intact without surface defects).
  • Material Specifications: Plastic type (e.g., PC+ABS), color codes, and special properties (flame retardancy, high-temperature resistance, etc.)
2. Recommended Supplementary Materials

Production & Mold Parameters:

  • Annual production forecast (e.g., 300,000 units/year).
  • Mold lifespan requirement (e.g., >500,000 shots).
  • Cavity number request (single-cavity/multi-cavity/family mold).

Surface Finish Requirements:

  • Texture/grain finishing (provide texture code).
  • Polishing grade (e.g., SPI-A2).

Mold Steel Preference:

  • Specify if using designated steels (e.g., S136, 718H).
3. Additional Documents for Special Cases
  • Mold Flow Analysis Requirements Sheet: Required if specific analysis is needed (e.g., weld line positioning, sink mark risks). If not provided, we will submit a report following standard procedures.
  • Functional Testing Standards: Provide test criteria if the product requires drop tests, air-tightness tests, etc.
  • Physical Samples/Photos: Recommended for complex structures or appearance-critical parts to avoid design misunderstandings.

We will provide technical feasibility feedback and optimization suggestions within 48 hours after receiving complete documentation.

What information or files are needed for mold design?

You can provide 2D drawings or 3D models (STEP, IGES, etc.). If necessary, our engineers will offer design optimization suggestions, including runner layout, cooling system, and demolding structure improvements.

What roles do CNC and EDM play in mold manufacturing?

CNC  machining is mainly used for precision cutting, milling, and drilling—ideal for machining cores, cavities, and structural components with high efficiency and accuracy. EDM, on the other hand, is excellent for high-hardness materials and sharp internal corners that are difficult to reach with cutters. Typically, CNC is used for main shape machining, while EDM handles fine detail features, ensuring molds achieve both precision and complexity.

How do you ensure the precision and dimensional stability of injection molds?

We ensure precision through advanced equipment (such as 5-axis CNC, mirror EDM, and CMM inspection) and a strict process control system. Each component is fully inspected and test-fitted before assembly, followed by multiple mold trials to verify part dimensions, fitting accuracy, and stability for mass production.

How long does it take to produce an injection mold?

Production time depends on mold complexity, number of cavities, size, and surface requirements. Generally, small single-cavity molds take about 3–5 weeks, medium molds 5–7 weeks, and complex multi-cavity or two-shot molds 8–10 weeks or more. A detailed schedule is provided at the project start, and progress is tracked in real time to ensure stable and transparent delivery.

What’s the cost difference between small-batch and large-batch molds?

Small-batch molds usually have simpler structures and lower lifespan requirements, often made from pre-hardened steel or aluminum, resulting in lower costs. Large-batch molds require higher durability, typically made from hardened steels (like H13 or S136) with optimized cooling and automation systems. While their initial cost is higher, the per-part cost is lower, making them ideal for long-term mass production.

Do you offer expedited production services?

Yes, we do. Through our dual-factory collaboration model, we can run simultaneous design and machining operations at two facilities with 24-hour shift rotations, significantly reducing lead time. For urgent projects, we prioritize manpower and machine scheduling while maintaining quality, ensuring customers receive production-ready molds in the shortest time possible.

Other Questions
What happens if a mold defect or wear occurs?

If any defect, wear, or performance issue occurs during mold testing or production, we immediately initiate a root cause analysis. Our engineers will inspect reports and physical parts to identify the source (design, machining, assembly, or usage) and provide repair, adjustment, or replacement solutions. Repairable areas can be reworked through polishing, welding, or insert replacement, while structural issues are addressed through design optimization to restore precision and durability.

How do you ensure the quality of mass-produced injection parts?

We implement full-process quality control—from Moldflow simulation during design, to parameter optimization during trial runs, to first-article and periodic inspections during mass production. All process data (temperature, pressure, cycle time, etc.) is logged and monitored to ensure consistency in size, appearance, and performance. Regular mold cleaning, lubrication, and inspection prevent dimensional drift during long-term use.

Do you provide mold maintenance and upgrade services?

Yes, we offer comprehensive maintenance and upgrade services. Routine maintenance includes cleaning, polishing, replacing wear parts, and checking cooling channels to extend mold life. Upgrade services cover design modifications for product updates, material changes, or automation integration to boost production efficiency. We also support maintenance and upgrades for molds, providing full technical and engineering support.
