Sandblasting
What’s Sandblasting?
Sandblasting uses compressed air to spray abrasive materials (such as quartz sand and corundum) at high speed onto the mold surface. The impact and cutting action cleans the surface and changes its roughness, thereby improving coating adhesion and durability.
- Surface Cleaning: Removes oil, rust, and oxide layers from the mold surface, ensuring a clean base for subsequent painting or processing.
- Roughness Improvement: By adjusting the surface microstructure, the mechanical bond between the coating and the mold is enhanced, reducing the risk of peeling.
- Performance Enhancement: Improves mold fatigue resistance, extends service life, and optimizes coating leveling.

Common Abrasives in Injection Mold Sandblasting
Abrasive Type |
Application Scenario |
Advantages & Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Glass Beads (60-120 mesh) | Fine polishing, removing slight oxidation | Doesn’t alter dimensions, creates smooth surface |
| Aluminum Oxide (80-220 mesh) | Routine cleaning and texture treatment | High hardness, long service life |
| Silicon Carbide | Deep cleaning and roughening | Strong cutting ability, may affect dimensions |
| Plastic Abrasives | Precision component processing | Won’t damage mold steel |

Why do injection molds need sandblasting?
- Mold cleaning: Removes contaminants such as residual plastic, release agent, and oxides.
- Surface roughening: Increases surface roughness to improve coating adhesion.
- Texturing: Creates special surface effects such as leather grain and matte finish.
- Mold repair: Removes minor scratches and damage.
How to select Sandblasting parameters?
- Air pressure: Typically 2-5 bar (depending on the hardness of the mold steel)
- Distance: 100-300 mm
- Angle: 30-90 degrees (45 degrees is recommended for textured applications)
- Time: Adjust according to desired effect (typically 30 seconds to 5 minutes)
Does Sandblasting affect mold dimensional accuracy?
- Minor impact: Regular sandblasting removes approximately 0.001-0.01mm.
- Critical areas: Precision areas such as cavities are recommended to use finer abrasives (such as 120-mesh glass beads or higher).
- Control method: Measure critical dimensions before and after sandblasting.
