Shut off and Kiss off

In mold design, achieving precise part quality, avoiding defects, and ensuring mold longevity depend heavily on proper sealing and contact between mold components. Two critical concepts in this context are Shut Off and Kiss Off. These terms refer to different types of contact mechanisms between mold surfaces, each serving distinct purposes in injection molding, die casting, and other manufacturing processes. Understanding their differences and applications is essential for optimizing mold performance and part quality.

What is Shut Off in Mold Design?

Shut Off refers to a complete sealing contact between two mold halves (core and cavity) or between sliding components (such as sliders and lifters). Its primary purpose is to prevent material leakage (flash) during injection or casting.

Key Characteristics of Shut Off:

  • Full Contact & High Pressure: The mating surfaces are tightly pressed together under clamping force to ensure no gaps exist.
  • Precision Machining Required: Shut-off surfaces must be finely polished or lapped to avoid wear and flash formation.

Common Applications:

  • Main parting lines of injection molds.
  • Slide and core shut-offs in complex molds.
  • Areas where material must be completely sealed (e.g., around holes or edges).

A poorly designed Shut Off can lead to flash (excess material seeping out), increased mold wear, and frequent maintenance.

What is Kiss Off in Mold Design?

Kiss Off describes a controlled, light contact between mold surfaces, where they touch but do not fully compress. This technique is used to manage part thickness, reduce stress, and prevent over-packing in specific areas.

Key Characteristics of Kiss Off:

  • Light Contact with Minimal Pressure: Unlike Shut Off, Kiss Off allows slight clearance (often 0.02–0.05 mm) to avoid excessive clamping.
  • Prevents Over-Compression: Helps maintain uniform wall thickness in thin sections or ribs.

Common Applications:

  • Thin-walled plastic parts (e.g., containers, packaging).
  • Ribs and bosses where excessive pressure could cause sink marks.
  • Areas requiring controlled material flow.

If Kiss Off is not properly designed, it may result in incomplete filling or inconsistent part dimensions.

Comparing Shut Off and Kiss Off

Feature Shut Off Kiss Off
Contact Type Full, high-pressure sealing Light, controlled contact
Purpose Prevents flash and material leakage Controls part thickness, reduces stress
Machining High precision, polished surfaces Slightly looser tolerance
Applications Parting lines, core seals Thin walls, ribs, delicate features

Both Shut Off and Kiss Off play vital roles in mold design, ensuring part accuracy and mold durability. While Shut Off focuses on sealing and preventing defects like flash, Kiss Off helps manage material distribution and stress in delicate areas. Proper application of these techniques leads to higher-quality molded parts, reduced scrap rates, and extended mold life.
