Jetting Marks

Transparent plastic parts are widely used in industries such as medical devices, automotive lighting, consumer electronics, and packaging. Achieving high optical clarity while maintaining structural integrity requires careful design considerations in material selection, mold design, and processing parameters.

Material Selection for Transparency

The choice of plastic significantly impacts optical performance. Common transparent plastic parts materials include:

  • Polycarbonate (PC) – High impact resistance, good clarity, but prone to scratching.
  • Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA/Acrylic) – Excellent clarity and UV resistance, but brittle.
  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – Good for bottles and packaging, recyclable.
  • Cyclic Olefin Copolymer (COC) – High chemical resistance, low birefringence, ideal for medical applications.

Key Considerations:

  • Avoid fillers/additives that cause haze or discoloration.
  • Use optical-grade resins for superior light transmission.
  • Consider UV stabilization if the part will be exposed to sunlight.

Mold Design for Optical Clarity

The mold design directly affects the surface finish and internal stresses of transparent parts.

Surface Finish

  • Polishing: Cavities should be mirror-polished (Ra < 0.05 µm) to prevent flow marks.
  • Texture: Avoid textured surfaces unless diffuse transparency is desired (e.g., light guides).

Gate Design

  • Prevent flow lines & jetting: Use fan gates, tab gates, or submarine gates to ensure smooth melt flow.
  • Gate location: Place gates where flow marks will be least visible (e.g., edges rather than center).

Cooling System

  • Uniform cooling prevents warpage and internal stresses.
  • Baffles & bubblers help cool thick sections evenly.

Processing Parameters for High Clarity

Injection molding parameters must be optimized to avoid defects like bubbles, splay marks, and stress whitening.

Temperature Control

  • Melt temperature: Should be within the material’s recommended range (e.g., 260–300°C for PC).
  • Mold temperature: Higher mold temps (80–120°C) reduce residual stress and improve flow.

Injection Speed & Pressure

  • Slow initial injection prevents jetting marks.
  • High packing pressure ensures full cavity filling without sink marks.

Drying & Handling

  • Pre-dry hygroscopic materials (PC, PET) to prevent bubbles.
  • Use clean, dust-free environments to avoid surface defects.

Post-Processing & Quality Control

After molding, additional steps may be needed to enhance clarity:

  • Annealing relieves internal stresses that cause birefringence.
  • Coatings (AR, hard coat) improve scratch resistance.
  • Optical inspection checks for defects like bubbles, streaks, or haze.

Designing transparent plastic parts requires a balance of material science, mold engineering, and precise processing. By selecting the right resin, optimizing mold design, and fine-tuning injection parameters, we can achieve crystal-clear parts with minimal defects.
