Two Shot Injection Molding

What is Two Shot Injection Molding?

Two Shot Injection Molding (also called Dual-Shot or 2K Molding) is an advanced manufacturing process where two different plastic materials or colors are injected sequentially into a mold within a single cycle, creating a seamless, multi-material component.

  • Key Feature: Combines materials without adhesives or assembly (e.g., rigid + soft, opaque + transparent).

Two Shot Injection Molding Process

First Injection:

  • The base material (e.g., ABS) is injected into the mold cavity.

Mold Rotation/Transfer:

  • The mold rotates or shifts to align with the second cavity.

Second Injection:

  • A second material (e.g., TPE) is overmolded onto the first part.

Cooling & Ejection:

  • The finished part is ejected as a single integrated piece.

    Advantages of Metal Insert Molding

    • Cost Efficiency – No secondary assembly or bonding steps.
    • Superior Bonding – Materials fuse at a molecular level (no glue failure).
    • Design Flexibility – Complex geometries (e.g., seals, grips, multi-color parts).
    • Enhanced Durability – Resistant to vibration, moisture, and wear.

Two-Shot Molding vs Traditional Multi-Material Processes

    Criteria Two-Shot Molding Traditional Assembly
Production Time Single cycle (60–120 sec) Multiple steps (assembly + curing)
Cost Higher tooling, lower labor Lower tooling, higher labor
Bond Strength Material fusion (no weak points) Adhesives/mechanical fasteners
Design Freedom Complex shapes (e.g., seals) Limited by assembly methods
Material Waste Minimal (no glue/overhead) Higher (trimming, adhesives)

    Frequently Asked Questions!

How strong is the bond between the two materials?
    • Bond strength depends on material compatibility. For example:
    • ABS + TPE: 500–800 N/cm² (tested per ASTM D638).

    • PP + EPDM: Requires mechanical interlocks (e.g., undercuts).

What’s the minimum/maximum part size for two-shot molding?

    Typical range: 0.5g – 500g. Micro-molding (<0.5g) requires specialized equipment.

    Can recycled materials be used?

Yes, but compatibility testing is critical (e.g., rPP + virgin TPE).
