Uneven Colors

Injection molding is a highly efficient manufacturing process, but defects like black spots and black specks can compromise product quality. These imperfections not only affect aesthetics but may also weaken structural integrity, leading to rejected parts and increased production costs.

Common Causes of Uneven Colors in Injection Molding

1. Poor Material Mixing

  • Masterbatch vs. Compound Issues:
  • Masterbatch (color concentrate) must be thoroughly mixed with the base resin.
  • Pre-compounded pellets (pre-colored resin) should be uniform.
Solution:
  • Use high-quality mixers or gravimetric blenders.
  • Ensure proper screw design for effective melting and dispersion.

2. Inconsistent Melt Temperature

  • Cold Spots & Hot Zones: Uneven heating in the barrel leads to color streaks.
Solution:
  • Check heater bands and thermocouples for accuracy.
  • Optimize barrel temperature zones for the specific polymer.

3. Improper Screw Design or Wear

  • Worn Screw or Barrel: Poor mixing causes unmelted pellets or color streaks.
Solution:
  • Inspect and replace worn screws/barrels.
  • Use mixing screws with shear elements for better dispersion.

4. Mold Flow Issues

  • Flow Lines & Weld Lines: Color variations appear where molten plastic meets.
Solution:
  • Adjust injection speed and pressure to ensure uniform flow.
  • Modify gate locations to minimize flow disruptions.

5. Contamination

  • Resin Contamination: Different-colored material remnants in the hopper.
Solution:
  • Purge the machine thoroughly between color changes.
  • Use dedicated screws for light/dark colors.

6. Pigment Degradation

  • Overheating: Some pigments break down at high temperatures, causing discoloration.
Solution:
  • Use heat-stable pigments for high-temperature resins (e.g., engineering plastics).
  • Reduce barrel temperature if burning occurs.

How to Prevent Uneven Coloring

1. Optimize Material Preparation

  • Use pre-dried resins to prevent moisture-related defects.
  • Ensure proper blending ratios (masterbatch to base resin).

2. Adjust Processing Parameters

  • Temperature Control: Maintain consistent melt temps.
  • Injection Speed: Too fast = flow marks; too slow = incomplete filling.
  • Back Pressure: Helps homogenize the melt (typically 50–150 psi).

3. Mold & Tooling Adjustments

  • Polish the Mold: Rough surfaces can trap pigments.
  • Vent the Mold Properly: Gas traps can cause burn marks and color shifts.

4. Use High-Quality Colorants

Organic vs. Inorganic Pigments:
  • Organic = brighter but less heat-resistant.
  • Inorganic = more stable but limited color range.
Liquid vs. Pellet Colorants:
  • Liquids disperse better but require precise dosing.
