Waterproof Level of Electronic Components
The waterproof level of electronic components refers to the waterproof performance of electronic components. Commonly used waterproof rating standards include IP rating and NEMA rating. Among them, IP rating is established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and NEMA rating is established by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) of the United States.
IP Grade |
Waterproof Grade |
Waterproof Performance |
| IPX0 | No waterproofing | – |
| IPX1 | Drip protection | Vertically dripping water has no effect on the device |
| IPX2 | Drip protection | Vertically dripping water has no effect on the device within a range of 15 degrees |
| IPX3 | Rainproof | Light rain has no effect on the equipment |
| IPX4 | Splash-proof | Water splashing from any direction has no effect on the device |
| IPX5 | Water spray prevention | Water splashing from any direction has no effect on the device |
| IPX6 | Protection against strong water spray | Strong water jets from any direction have no effect on the device |
| IPX7 | Waterproof | The device can be immersed in water for a short period of time |
| IPX8 | Waterproof | The device can be immersed in water for a long period of time |
Tips: The IP rating is an international standard for measuring the waterproofness of electronic components. It is divided into two digits: IPXX, with the first digit representing the dustproofness and the second representing the waterproofness. The waterproofness rating ranges from 0 to 8, with higher numbers indicating better waterproofness.
NEMA Grade |
Waterproof Grade |
Waterproof Performance |
| NEMA 1 | No waterproofing | / |
| NEMA 2 | Drip protection | Vertically dripping water has no effect on the device |
| NEMA 3 | Rainproof | Light rain has no effect on the equipment |
| NEMA 3R | Rainproof | Outdoor use, resistant to wind and rain |
| NEMA 3S | Rainproof | For outdoor use, resistant to wind, rain and snow |
| NEMA 4 | Splash-proof | Water splashing from any direction has no effect on the device |
| NEMA 4X | Splash-proof | Stainless steel housing, corrosion-resistant and splash-proof |
| NEMA 5 | Water spray prevention | Water splashing from any direction has no effect on the device |
| NEMA 6 | Protection against strong water spray | Strong water jets from any direction have no effect on the device |
| NEMA 6P | Waterproof | The device can be immersed in water for a short period of time |
| NEMA 12 | Dust and drip proof | Dustproof and dripping water |
| NEMA 13 | Dust and drip proof | Dustproof and splashproof |
| NEMA 13R | Dust and drip proof | Indoor use, dustproof and splashproof |
Tips: NEMA rating is a waterproof rating standard developed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is mainly used in the US market and is divided into 13 levels.
